Join us for Bannister to Basquiat: 150 Years of African-American Painting on May 10, 2025, from 1:00 to 2:00 PM at Buffalo Prescott, located at 11411 Buffalo St, Detroit, MI 48212. Led by writer, artist, curator, and teacher Christopher Stackhouse, this lecture explores the cultural continuity of African-American painting from Early Modern art to Contemporary art, bookending a 150-year span with Edward Mitchell Bannister (1826–1901) as forebear and Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960–1988) as scion.
Stackhouse is the author of Plural (Counterpath Press) and co-author of Seismosis (1913 Press). His essays and artwork have appeared in monographs like The Basquiat Reader (University of California Press). With a diverse exhibition history spanning photography, painting, and curatorial models, Stackhouse has lectured at various cultural institutions.
