Detroit’s LOVE Building: A Communal Space for Joy, Belonging and Connection

The LOVE Building in Detroit was born from a simple question at a community party in 2016: What if we built something together? Led by the Detroit Justice Center, Detroit Disability Power, and Allied Media Projects (AMP), the idea grew into a shared space purchased in 2018 and officially opened in 2023.

Now home to seven organizations, the LOVE Building serves as more than office space—it’s a hub for community connection. From rallies and art shows to baby showers and music recording sessions, the building offers free, value-aligned events open to all. A standout program, “LOVE at Night,” draws a diverse crowd to celebrate local talent monthly.

With a governance model rooted in community leadership and a formal Community Benefits Agreement, the LOVE Building prioritizes joy, connection, and authentic engagement.
